"Negro Spirituals: Songs of Hope and Survival"
Guest Minister Reverend Shuma Chakravarty

February being Black History month, we will recognize it with wonderful
African American spiritual music on Sunday, February 5.

Thanks to the efforts of our own Howard Mathews, his trio will join Beth
and the choir with well-known and well-loved gospel songs played on guitar,
autoharp, banjo, mandolin and piano.

U-U minister and writer Rev. Shuma Chakravarty will be with us as well.
Her sermon title is "Negro Spirituals: Songs of Hope and Survival".

Shuma Chakravarty is an ordained Unitarian Universalist Minister
who has been in Final Fellowship since 1997. She has graduate degrees
in English Literature (from Simmons College) and theology (from B.U.
and Harvard University). Her poetry and prose have been published in
several anthologies, including the “Meditation Manual“ of the UUA
which will be available this spring. She has served several U.U. and
U.C.C. churches and traveled widely. Currently she does pulpit supply
and is the Director of The Resource Center for Ecology, Compassion
and Culture, which she founded in 1991.

Mark Your Calendars and Check Your Availability
It’s Dump Duty Time Again –
FPUU is Signed Up for March

Calling all hardy souls, it is that time of year again to dig out those
old ratty clothes, put on those gloves that you don’t mind getting
grimy and heading to the dump for your annual volunteer experience
at the Scituate Transfer station. For those newer to the church, you
may not have had this fulfilling experience before. Try it, you’ll find it
rewarding. The town allows nonprofits to collect all redeemable bottles
and cans and retain the redemption value as a donation.

In all seriousness, we realize that this isn’t everyone’s idea of a rockin’
good time. Yet, it is the Church’s 2nd highest revenue producing
fundraising event and very important to raising the revenue necessary
to operate the church. For our month of work, we typically bring in
over $3500.
This year, Mark McGinnis will be continuing in his leadership position
of managing this event and provided the greatly appreciated assistance
to ensure smooth onsite operations. Assisting him will be
Howard Mathews, new to this activity last year, but now an old pro.
Chris Berkley has agreed to assist with the administrative duties of
tracking sign up for volunteers and ensuring that all our slots are filled
which is a big task as we have to have a volunteer on site every day
the transfer station is open (Friday through Tuesday).

So that gets us to the big request…..please, please, please everyone
look at your calendars and consider when you might be able to devote
3 hours of your time to working. We will be posting a sign-up sheet in
the Sloop Room and Chris will be sending out emails to solicit sign ups.
We really appreciate you making this process run smoothly and
minimizing the work involved for those running the event. Signing
up early will make the job so much easier.

If you haven’t volunteered at the transfer station before, please don’t
let that stop you from signing up. Chris, Mark, Howard or I can provide
you with all you need to know and we’ll pair you up with a seasoned
professional for onsite training. You’ll be a pro in no time.

Liam Pennywell, who set out to be a philosopher and ended up
teaching fifth grade, never much liked the job at that run-down
private school, so early retirement doesn’t bother him. But he
is troubled by his inability to remember anything about the first
night that he moved into his new and spare condominium on
the outskirts of Baltimore. All he knows when he wakes up the
next day in the hospital is that his head is sore and bandaged.
His effort to recover the moments of his life that have been
stolen from him leads him on an unexpected detour. What he
needs is someone
who can do the remembering for him. What he gets is . . .

The church season of Advent is about preparing for and making room for new life, with all of its unexpected joys and challenges.

New Member Orientation
Are you new to the church? Have you been around for a while but haven’t decided whether or not actually to “sign the book” and become a voting member? If you would like to explore this, you are invited to join Mr. Cook after services on December 11th for an orientation to membership

What's Happening in Religious Education

There will be no Story For All Ages during Service this Sunday so that the kids can spend more time preparing for the holiday play. Please send your children directly upstairs at 10:30.

After the service, the children will rehearse for the holiday play in the Sanctuary until 12:30. During that time, parents are asked to attend a brief information session and volunteer sign-up for our regular church school classes, which will resume after the holidays. The meeting will begin at 11:50 and will be held in the rear of the Sloop Room.

What's Happening in Religious Education

Who would want to miss it? Attendance mandatory the next three weeks while we prepare for our Holiday Pageant! Please note the rehearsal schedule:

December 4: 10:30 Children's Worship Upstairs. Gift wrapping and first run-through with scripts in hand.

December 11: 10:40 Rehearsal upstairs (after "story for all ages" in sanctuary)

Learn what's involved in leading classes, how team teaching works, and how the ministry of religious education gives back. Also invited are non-parents interested in helping our children explore religion and spirituality.

So …. It really is a time that we should make plans and not be caught up in this so-called wonderful whirlwind. Let’s face it, we are all guilty of this.

Job Description: THE contact person for members/friends to notify when they learn of someone in our Church community who is ill, convalescing, mourning, etc.

The Caring/Concerns person would then see that the information was given to the Minister and PC Chairs. This person would also coordinate meals, rides, etc., if necessary.

Qualifications: willingness, fairly regular Sunday attendance, use of email.

With all of our challenges, it is well to consider the many things for which we give thanks.

LAST CALL FOR GIFT BASKET DONATIONS!!

Please be sure to bring your gift basket donations this Sunday, 11/20 or at the latest next Sunday, 11/27/11.

A collection bin will be available. We will be assembling and finishing the baskets during wreath-making on Wednesday, 11/30/11.

Any new items for themed baskets for Gourmet, Hostess Gifts, Kids Activities, Gardening or Pets are much appreciated.

We also need baskets and other containers! Contact Cathie McGowan (781-545-7714 or patmikecat@aol.com) for more info.

What's Happening this week in Religious Education:

7 Cents a Day jars - bring these into the sanctuary this Sunday and they will be poured into a communal vessel at the beginning of the service.

Interfaith Social Services Food Drive - Thanks to all those who have donated. If you haven't yet donated, this Sunday is your last chance. The kids will check out how much food was donated and will load it into Carmel Callan's car. She has graciously volunteered to deliver the goods to Interfaith Social Services in Quincy, an organization that provides a range of services to people in 10 communities from Quincy to Scituate.

Bake Sale - To benefit a hunger organization to be determined. With all of the food and money coming in this Sunday, the kids will be busy and energized by what they - and you - have generated!They will vote this Sunday on which organization to donate the money to: Heifer International, Oxfam, Scituate Food Pantry, or the Plymouth area Coalition for the Homeless.

First Parish's Caring/Concerns Point Person
We are seeking a volunteer to be First Parish's Caring/Concerns person for the next few months.

Job Description: THE contact person for members/friends to notify when they learn of someone in our Church community who is ill, convalescing, mourning, etc.

The Caring/Concerns person would then see that the information was given to the Minister and PC Chairs. This person would also coordinate meals, rides, etc., if necessary.

Qualifications: willingness, fairly regular Sunday attendance, use of email.

With so much going on at church this week, I thought it would be a good idea to send out a reminder as to just what is cooking. This Sunday 11/20, is the last "faith in action" Sunday until sometime in January. The children have several initiatives going that will wrap up this Sunday:

With so much going on at church this week, I thought it would be a good idea to send out a reminder as to just what is cooking. This Sunday 11/20, is the last "faith in action" Sunday until sometime in January. The children have several initiatives going that will wrap up this Sunday:

7 Cents a Day jars - bring these into the sanctuary this Sunday and they will be poured into a communal vessel at the beginning of the service. The children will spend time rolling them over the next couple of Sundays.

Interfaith Social Services Food Drive - Thanks to all those who have donated. If you haven't yet donated, this Sunday is your last chance. So, it does not need to be a huge event...if your child is invested in bringing something in for the bake sale, please do so. Adults needed - Please contact me asap if you can help out with this Sunday's R.E. program. After this, our holiday play helpers will be "on" - thanks again to Leah Todd, Ann Hale, Laura Carson-Laciner, and Laura Smith.

Speaking of the holiday play, sign-up forms are due for the Holiday Play - click here to download. Please fill out and return this Sunday. It seems we have several kids vying for the larger speaking roles which is wonderful, but we may need to do a lottery so we want to be sure all of the names of those interested are entered. We need to be ready to roll for the first rehearsal on December 4th. Scripts will be disseminated to the kids just as soon as we have the roles assigned.

One last note. Religious education curricula will start back up after the holidays and at this point we have no one signed up to lead classes. Stay tuned for a scheduled "Orientation to Religious Education Facilitation". Attendance at this will help us fill the schedule and answer any questions you may have about what it means to serve your church in this way.

Time for Team Snowflake to warm up!
As many of you know, the Snowflake Fair is our most profitable fundraiser of the year. It’s also a cherished First Parish holiday tradition that strengthens and celebrates our church community. This event brings all of our energy and talents together for one action packed day! How will you take part in Team Snowflake this year? Here’s the “special teams” and “positions” you have to choose from:

SPECIAL TEAMS POSITIONS
FUDGE SHOP fudge-maker or candy-maker
BAKE TABLE baker (baked goods, jellies, canned items, etc)
SEWING AND CRAFTS artisan (make something…anything...to sell)
JEWELRY contributor (new or used jewelry for resale)
GIFT BASKETS shopper (theme items for baskets)
XMAS TREASURES contributor (gently used decorations for resale)

Religious Education News:

Our young people are exploring food and hunger on local, national, and international levels and learning how they can make a difference. Over the next few weeks, they are conducting a food drive. Normally, when our church gets involved in local food initiatives it is with the Scituate Food Pantry. This year, due to an urgent plea from the Interfaith Social Services, who has a higher volume of families in need than ever before, we are conducting a food drive for them.

On Sunday November 20, 2011, Houses of Worship from all over the South Shore will collect food during worship services and then bring it to Interfaith Social Services food pantry for distribution to impoverished local families. Interfaith serves South Shore residents in need from ten communities ranging from Quincy to Scituate. Each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving Interfaith has hosted this ingathering of food at their office in Quincy. Please donate!

Thanksgiving Food Drive:
Sundays, November 6, and 13th for Non-Perishables
Sunday November 20 for perishables such as produce and baked goods. We will deliver the goods after church on November 20, 2011

November Sundays:
November 6: Grades 1-6 Hunger awareness, food drive. OWL.
November 13: Grades 1-8 Holiday pageantry - introduction, choose parts. OWL
November 13: There will be a youth group meeting at 6:30
November 20: Grades 1-6 Food drive, bake sale. OWL
November 27: No religious ed classes. One Room Schoolhouse. No OWL

There will be a meeting before church this Sunday, November 6, at 9:45 for anyone interested in helping out with this years' pageant.

Christine is available for questions, concerns and consultation on Sunday mornings before church and on Thursdays from 9am - 1pm. Please schedule an appointment or drop in to say hello!

Among Ourselves:
- Our sympathies to Barbara Leavitt on the death last week of her Mother, Mona Fornell. Barbara's family celebrated her Mom's 100th birthday in September. Happy memories.
- The Parish Committee voted to accept Beth and David Dubuisson's generous offer to loan their harpsichord to our Church. Thank you to Alliance and Unity Club for helping with the moving costs. When it arrives, Beth will have it placed at the front of the sanctuary, where we may all see it. What a treat it will be for us when Beth plays it. Thank you, Beth and David.
- Please notice the new table in the front of the sanctuary. Kudos and thanks to Jack Shaw.
- The Parish Committee voted to give the old organ (not working, too expensive to repair, and with no monetary value to speak of) to Michael Kilduff. We are glad it will have a good and welcome home.
- Eileen Donaldson was recently involved in a car accident but Alan reports that she is now recovering at home.

All the women in the church are welcomed to join us for an lively evening of socializing, fellowship and a delicious meal. Come break bread with us and get to know one another! It’s also our annual Pumpkin Swap!!! If you wish, bring an inexpensive pumpkin-themed gift to exchange. (Don’t stress ... you don’t have to participate in the swap if you prefer not to!!) Items for the Scituate Food Pantry are welcomed as well!

The cost of the meal is $5, paid at the door. If you’ve never joined us, please do!! All you need to bring is yourself ... the hostesses take care of the rest!

Over 34 children and youth are now registered for our Religious Ed programs. This is great news – but WE NEED TEACHERS ASAP! Currently we have around a 1:10 student teacher ratio. While this is do-able it can make for a somewhat stressful teaching experience. Julianna Dunn and Laura Smith each need a teaching [...]]]> We are off to a great start! Over 34 children and youth are now registered for our Religious Ed programs. This is great news – but WE NEED TEACHERS ASAP! Currently we have around a 1:10 student teacher ratio. While this is do-able it can make for a somewhat stressful teaching experience. Julianna Dunn and Laura Smith each need a teaching assistant or co-leader to help make this an enjoyable, fruitful session for all. Please contact either of them or Christine Bulman without delay!

Parents have been oriented to this years’ 7th and 8th grade Our Whole Lives Program. The program begins on Sunday September 25 at 6pm in the Atkinson Room of the Cohasset Parish House. Please bring signed consent forms to the first class! If you did not make it to the orientation and you need information please contact Christine before Sunday the 25th.
The Youth Advisors have begun the planning process for this years’ Youth Group activities. Of course this won’t be complete until the entire Youth Group has participated in the process! One of our Youth Advisors is taking an unanticipated trip so we are going to postpone the first meeting until both of the Youth Advisors can be present. If you have a high school aged youth, expect to be hearing news over the next couple of weeks as to the year’s first meeting date and location.

You may have noticed several children sporting tie dye this past Sunday....Thank you to the families that came to the Family Information Night and Tie Dye party! The children had a ball dying shirts, pillow cases and even socks! Parents enjoyed informal yet meaningful conversation about religious education, Unitarianism and UU parenting. I look forward to similar conversations in the future.
